People elect council members to oversee local government, represent residents, and ensure transparency and accountability in public decisions.

Residents deserve to know what their representatives have accomplished during their term:

• Were concerns answered?
• Were public dollars properly scrutinized?
• Were decisions explained openly?

Questions about fundraising

When elected officials discuss raising substantial funds for future elections, residents also have reasonable questions:

• Who is contributing, and how much?
• What relationships do contributors have with the municipality?
• How are potential conflicts of interest identified and managed?
• Is fundraising becoming a greater priority than responding to residents?

Fundraising alone does not establish wrongdoing. But asking for public trust means accepting public scrutiny.

A public report card

Before asking residents for another term, elected representatives should present a clear report card showing their work, decisions, responsiveness, and results.

Residents deserve accountable government throughout the term—not just attention during an election campaign.
