Residents Deserve a Full-Term Report Card—and Transparency About Election Fundraising

When a councillor begins raising money for the next election soon after being elected, residents have reasonable questions about priorities, independence, and accountability.

Throughout the term

• Were development decisions based on planning evidence and the broader public interest?
• Did developers or people connected to development applications contribute to the election campaign, and how were potential conflicts addressed?
• Were residents given a fair opportunity to be heard, including those who opposed particular developments?
• Did the councillor remain accessible and respond to public concerns?
• Did they provide effective oversight of City administration while treating residents and staff fairly?
• What does their record of attendance, motions, votes, and results show?

Campaign contributions alone do not prove favoritism. But transparent fundraising and clearly explained decisions help residents assess whether their representatives acted independently and fairly.

A public report card

Before seeking another term, every councillor should present a public report card covering their entire term: promises, decisions, accomplishments, unresolved issues, and responsiveness to residents.

Public trust must be earned throughout the term. Residents deserve to judge performance alongside election promises.
