Dr. Afzalur Rahman seeks a Surrey school trustee seat

Published October 4, 2026 · DCC Now · Candidate-submitted · Not an endorsement

Dr. Afzalur Rahman is a candidate for one of Surrey’s six school trustee seats on Saturday, October 17, 2026. He is listed as an independent on the City of Surrey ballot. Voters may select up to six trustee candidates.

What he told DCC Now

“I’m Professor Dr. Afzalur Rahman, and I’m running for Surrey School District Trustee on October 17, 2026. I’m an educator with 16+ years of teaching experience, including at Douglas College, as well as an entrepreneur and active community member.”

That teaching claim is his statement. A public professional profile also identifies him as a Douglas College faculty member in business and international trade.

Priorities he proposed

He said his priorities are:

  • Parents’ voice
  • Strong schools
  • Solving the portable classroom crisis
  • Responsible leadership
  • Reviewing SOGI in schools

His campaign message, as supplied: “Let Children Be Children.”

He did not provide a written proposal stating what a SOGI review would examine, what changes he would support, or how a review would meet provincial requirements and the district’s duty to keep learning environments safe and inclusive.

In a candidate questionnaire published by the Surrey Now-Leader on October 4, 2026, Rahman listed parents’ voice and age-appropriate education, which he described as opposing SOGI; fiscal accountability and resources closer to classrooms; and stronger support for students with disabilities and diverse needs. That questionnaire is his public statement, not a DCC Now interview. Surrey Now-Leader questionnaire.

He asked Surrey voters for their vote and asked that residents encourage family and friends in Surrey to vote for him. DCC Now is publishing that request as his words. It is not a DCC Now recommendation.

Election information

General voting day is Saturday, October 17, 2026. Advance voting is October 7, 10, 14 and 15. Confirm eligibility, identification and locations through the City of Surrey’s election page.
