Two people died and two others were injured after a vehicle struck four pedestrians in the parking lot at Tsawwassen Mills on Wednesday morning.

Delta Police say the collision happened at about 10:25 a.m. on Tsawwassen First Nation land. A National Day for Truth and Reconciliation community walk was underway and was scheduled to end with a house post unveiling at the mall.

Four pedestrians were struck. Two died of their injuries. The other two were treated by BC Emergency Health Services and taken to hospital.

“Preliminary information indicates the driver of the involved vehicle may have experienced a medical emergency prior to the collision,” Delta Police said in a news release.

Police said the crash is not related to the Truth and Reconciliation walk and that there is no ongoing risk to public safety. The file number is 26-18401.

What happened on site

The walk started at 9:30 a.m. at the TFN Recreation Centre. A house post unveiling was set for about 10:15 a.m. at a Tsawwassen Mills entrance.

A civil emergency alert went out just before 11 a.m. It said an incident had ended the event and asked participants to walk back the way they came and stay out of the area.

The City of Delta and Emergency Info BC told the public to avoid the Tsawwassen Mills area. A large emergency response was reported at the south side of the mall, including ambulances, police, fire units, and aircraft overhead. Police tape was in place.

Federal Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson was at the walk. His office said he and his team were unhurt and that the incident was not near their group.
